ALOHA SPIRIT AS WE SEE IT

Aloha translates to “the presence of breath” or “the breath of life”. It is a way of living and treating each other with love and respect. Its deeper meaning starts by teaching ourselves to love ourselves first, and then, spread the love to others. Aloha is sending and receiving a positive energy; aloha is living in harmony. It’s about creating and feeling healthy thoughts. However, do not mistake aloha for weakness. The spirit of aloha is strong physically, mentally, and emotionally. Live with aloha – because life is grand!

PETE BE

Managing Director

Pete is a father of 3 beautiful children, a husband to an outstanding and very forgiving wife, a son to loving and supportive parents, a braddah to 4 awesome older brothers, an uncle to many, many spoiled nieces and nephews. Ohana is where the heart belongs.

Pete is a seasoned business man. He originated from high tech in the storage capacity space. When he got tired of the hustle and bustle of his beloved high tech industry, he sought out a better quality of life and better way of serving the community. Da Kine Island Grill was born and became the obvious avenue to bring amazing island food, craft tropical and tiki drinks and live music entertainment to the people. He brings aloha to our community to share and build opportunities for fundraising, awareness, and support of our community.

Pete is a big advocate for creating local jobs and stimulate economic growth and development for small businesses. He believes that there are abundance of resources around us to ensure that there's enough for everyone.

Currently, Pete is working with the City of San Jose to bring an annual not-for-profit island festival to beautiful downtown San Jose at Caesar Chavez Park. 100% of the proceed will benefit 4 causes that are near and dear to our hearts. More details to follow shortly.

RENA BE

Head Chef/Managing Director

Rena is our head chef and co-owner. She's a native Hawaiian girl from Kalihi, Hawaii. Drifted from the island of Oahu in the early ‘90s, Rena brought 3 generations of island-style recipes to the Bay Area. These recipes have proven successful with our customers and have won numerous awards and recognition.

Rena found her strength and love in the hospitality industry. Her smiles, humble heart, and grateful island personality gravitate her to give birth to Da Kine Island Grill. She cooks from the heart. Without rushing things, she lets the flavors develop in her recipes, a Kalihi approach to cooking. Today, Rena lead a team of chefs and sous-chefs at Da Kine Island Grill.

Rooted in Hawaii with bloodline in the music and entertainment industries, Rena has been dancing hula since age 6 under the direction of her Grandma, Mary Manoalani Maduli. She has fond memories of performing with her cousins at functions and on TV shows.

In the early years, Rena danced under the direction of Kumu Hula Ed Collier. She later joined Na Mele Hula 'Ohana under the amazing direction of Kumu Hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu. In 1994, Rena won the title as Miss Ia 'Oe E Ka La. Her childhood dream was fulfilled when she competed 2 consecutive years in the Merrie Monarch Festival with her lifelong hula sistahz and braddahz.
